Samsung has officially entered the silicon-carbon battery era, and that could be one of the biggest upgrades for future Galaxy flagship phones. After debuting the technology in the new Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8, Samsung has now hinted that the Galaxy S27 series could be next. At the same time, the company confirmed that development of its long-rumored rollable smartphone is still moving forward, although commercialization will take more time.
Unlike previous rumors, these comments came directly from Samsung executives during a media briefing following Galaxy Unpacked in London, giving fans the clearest indication yet of the company's roadmap.
Samsung Finally Adopts Silicon-Carbon Batteries
For years, Chinese smartphone brands such as Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, and vivo have used silicon-carbon batteries to increase capacity without making phones thicker. Samsung remained cautious, largely due to its strict safety standards and the lessons learned after the Galaxy Note 7 battery crisis.
That has now changed.
Samsung confirmed that its latest foldables are the first Galaxy smartphones to use silicon-carbon battery technology, allowing higher energy density while maintaining slim designs.
Why Silicon-Carbon Batteries Matter
Traditional lithium-ion batteries use graphite anodes, while silicon-carbon batteries replace much of that graphite with silicon-based materials.
The advantages include:
- Higher energy density
- Larger battery capacity in the same physical space
- Thinner and lighter smartphones
- Better efficiency for premium flagship devices
This is particularly important for foldable phones, where every millimeter of internal space matters.
Samsung says it carefully validated the technology before shipping it in commercial devices, emphasizing long-term safety and durability.
Will the Galaxy S27 Get the Upgrade?
During the London briefing, Samsung MX hardware executive Moon Sung-hoon was asked whether future Galaxy S phones—including the expected Galaxy S27 lineup—would also adopt silicon-carbon batteries.
Instead of confirming the move, he explained that Samsung will evaluate the technology product by product and introduce it whenever it meaningfully improves the user experience.
That isn't an official confirmation, but it is the strongest public signal yet that the Galaxy S27 series is under consideration.
Bigger Battery Could Finally Arrive
Industry reports suggest Samsung is already testing silicon-carbon batteries for the Galaxy S27 family.
If testing is successful, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could move beyond Samsung's long-standing 5,000mAh limit and reach around 5,500mAh without increasing the phone's thickness. Some reports suggest capacity improvements may vary by model, with Samsung balancing battery size, weight, and cost.
That would help Samsung compete more directly with Chinese flagship phones that already offer 6,000mAh-class batteries using similar technology.
Samsung Isn't Rushing Battery Technology
Samsung's conservative approach isn't surprising.
Following the Note 7 incident, the company introduced one of the industry's strictest battery safety programs. Executives say every new battery technology must pass extensive validation before reaching consumers.
Rather than chasing larger capacity numbers immediately, Samsung appears focused on improving efficiency while maintaining long-term reliability.
Rollable Galaxy Phone Is Still Alive
Samsung also provided a rare update on its rollable smartphone project.
Moon Sung-hoon confirmed that the company has invested in rollable display technology for years and continues refining it before commercial release. He did not announce a launch date, but the comments indicate the project remains active rather than canceled.
Previous industry reports have pointed to an internal target around 2028, though Samsung has not officially committed to that timeline.
What This Means for Samsung Fans
If Samsung expands silicon-carbon batteries beyond foldables, the Galaxy S27 series could finally deliver one of the upgrades users have requested for years: noticeably better battery life without making the phone larger.
Combined with continued work on next-generation form factors like rollable displays, Samsung appears to be focusing on hardware innovation alongside its AI software strategy.
Whether the Galaxy S27 launches with a 5,500mAh battery or something even larger will ultimately depend on how Samsung's testing progresses over the coming months.
