Apple iPhone Fold: iPad-Style Multitasking & Specs | Device Decode

Welcome back to Device Decode! Apple is getting ready to launch its first-ever foldable smartphone this September. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, the highly anticipated "iPhone Fold" will work like a cross between a traditional iPhone and an iPad.

Here is a breakdown of everything you need to know about Apple's upcoming foldable device in simple terms.

A Wider, iPad-Like Design

The iPhone Fold is designed to give you the best of both worlds:

  1. When Closed: It will look and feel like a standard, flat iPhone.
  2. When Open: It will unfold to be closer to the size of an iPad mini.

Instead of making the phone tall and narrow like some competitors, Apple is using a wider shape with a 4:3 screen ratio. This wider screen will make it much easier to watch videos and use multiple apps at the same time.

New Multitasking Features

For the first time ever, an iPhone will support true side-by-side multitasking.

  1. When the phone is open, the user interface will look a lot like an iPad.
  2. You will be able to run two apps right next to each other on the screen.
  3. Many apps will also feature menus (sidebars) on the left side to make navigation easier.

Even though it shares these features with the iPad, the iPhone Fold will still run on iOS, not iPadOS. This means it will not run specific iPad apps or have the full range of iPad multitasking tools.

Cameras and Security Changes

Because foldable phones have less space inside, Apple had to make a few changes to the cameras and sensors:

  1. No Face ID: Instead of scanning your face, the iPhone Fold will use a fingerprint sensor built right into the power button.
  2. Dynamic Island: The outer screen will have a simple hole-punch camera for selfies, but it will still support the popular Dynamic Island for your notifications and Live Activities.
  3. Inner Camera: Apple tested hiding a camera under the inside screen, but the photo quality was too poor. Instead, they are using a visible hole-punch camera on the inside, too.
  4. Rear Cameras: The back of the phone will feature a dual-camera system, rather than the triple-camera setup found on Pro models, due to space limits.

How Much Will the iPhone Fold Cost?

Get ready to save up! Apple plans to price the iPhone Fold at around $2,000. This will easily make it the most expensive device in Apple's 2026 iPhone lineup.
