Meta's Worst-Kept Secret: New Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with a Display Leak Ahead of Launch

Meta's Worst-Kept Secret: New Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with a Display Leak Ahead of Launch

In a classic case of corporate self-sabotage, Meta has inadvertently given the world a clear look at its next generation of smart glasses. An unlisted and since-removed video, first spotted by UploadVR, showcased a new pair of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses featuring a built-in display and a companion wristband for control.

The leak doesn't stop there. The same video also featured a new model of camera-equipped smart glasses from Oakley, called "Sphaera," confirming that Meta plans to expand its partnership with EssilorLuxottica into the performance sports arena.

The star of the show, however, is the display-equipped model. Branded as "Meta | Ray-Ban" with a clear "Display" label, they are likely to be officially named the "Meta Ray-Ban Display." A brief clip demonstrates the device's potential, showing a user:

  • Asking Meta AI a question aloud and receiving answers directly in their field of vision.

  • Viewing turn-by-turn navigation on a map overlaid on the real world.

  • Translating text from a foreign sign in real time.

  • Replying to a chat by "writing" in the air using their hand, which is tracked by the new wristband.

This wristband is the key to the glasses' control scheme. As previously reported by CNBC, the band uses surface electromyography (sEMG) technology. This advanced method detects and interprets the electrical signals from neuromuscular movements in the wrist, allowing for subtle, precise control without the need for large gestures or a phone in hand.

This leak effectively spoils one of the biggest expected announcements from Meta Connect 2025, the company's annual AR/VR-focused event. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to host a keynote on Wednesday at 8 PM ET, where these products are now all but guaranteed to make their official debut.

This move represents a significant evolution from the current Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which focus on audio, photos, and live streaming without a visual display. Integrating a display directly into the sleek Ray-Ban form factor is a major technical hurdle that, if executed well, could bring true augmented reality one step closer to the mainstream.
