Nubia Executive Praises Apple’s Under-Display Camera on iPhone Duo

Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, has sparked discussion over its under-display camera technology. Nubia has now weighed in, with a senior executive saying Apple’s implementation shows that the company’s long-standing focus on under-display cameras was heading in the right direction.

Zhang Lei, Vice President of ZTE and General Manager of Nubia’s flagship products, commented on Apple’s approach to the under-display camera. He said Apple’s implementation is impressive and that it also validates the direction Nubia has pursued for the past seven years.

Zhang also argued that under-display camera technology should not be judged simply by looking at a black screen. According to him, the camera area can still be somewhat visible on color displays, although the technology has improved significantly over the years.

Nubia introduced its early under-display camera technology with the Axon 30 in 2020, which offered a color display resolution of around 200 PPI in the camera area. Zhang said the latest Nubia Z80 Ultra has reached 400 PPI, making the difference effectively impossible to notice with the naked eye during normal use.

Earlier, Ni Fei, President of ZTE’s terminal business and Nubia Technology, also commented on Apple’s under-display camera. He claimed that Apple is likely using a second-generation under-display camera solution, while Nubia has already developed its technology to the seventh generation.

Apple’s adoption of an under-display camera on its first foldable iPhone could give the technology further momentum, particularly as smartphone makers continue working toward cleaner, uninterrupted displays.
