How to Share Highlighted Text Links in Safari – Device Decode
Sometimes, when you share a webpage link, you don’t want the reader to scroll through the whole article. You just want them to notice a specific sentence or paragraph that matters.
To solve this problem, browsers now support a smart feature called Scroll to Text Fragment. At Device Decode, we explain how this feature works and how you can use it easily in Safari and other browsers.
What Is Scroll to Text Fragment?
Scroll to Text Fragment is a feature first introduced by Google in Chrome in 2020. It allows a link to open a webpage and automatically scroll to a specific piece of text. The selected text is also highlighted, making it easier for the reader to see exactly what you’re referring to.
You may have already noticed this in Google Search results. Sometimes, when you open a link, the page jumps directly to a highlighted sentence instead of starting from the top.
Which Browsers Support This Feature?
After Chrome, Google added this feature to the Chromium browser system. Because of that, many popular browsers now support it, including:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Brave
- Opera
- Vivaldi
More recently, Apple and Mozilla also added support, making this feature available on even more platforms.
How to Copy a Link With Highlight in Safari
Apple added full support for text fragment links in Safari 18, available on macOS Sequoia and later.
Here’s how to use it:
- Open any webpage in Safari
- Highlight the text you want to share
- Right-click or Control-click on the selected text
- Choose Copy Link with Highlight
Safari will create a special link that includes a text marker. When someone opens that link, the page will scroll directly to the selected text and highlight it automatically.
Using Highlight Links on iPhone and iPad
The Copy Link with Highlight option is also available in Safari on iPhone and iPad. However, at Device Decode, we noticed that this feature can be buggy and inconsistent on some iOS versions. Apple may improve this in future updates.
Things You Should Know
- Highlighted text may look different depending on how the website is designed
- This feature does not work on PDF files
- Firefox added support for text fragment links in mid-2025
Final Thoughts from Device Decode
Copy Link with Highlight is a simple but powerful feature. It saves time and helps readers focus on the exact content you want to share. While it still needs improvement on mobile devices, it works very well on desktop browsers and makes sharing information much easier.
