Nvidia CEO 'Disappointed' by Reported China AI Chip Ban Amid US-China Tensions

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed his disappointment following reports that China’s top tech firms have been ordered to halt purchases of Nvidia’s AI chips, including models specially made for the Chinese market.

Speaking to BBC News during a UK state visit alongside President Donald Trump and other tech leaders, Huang emphasized the importance of global access to AI technology, stating that “the advance of human society is not a zero-sum game.”

The reported ban was revealed by the Financial Times, citing a directive from China’s Cyberspace Administration, affecting major firms such as Alibaba, Tencent, and DeepSeek. Nvidia shares fell over 1% in premarket trading following the news.

Huang reaffirmed support for US efforts to resolve geopolitical challenges and noted he would “support the US” while still advocating for open global cooperation in AI development.

The development comes just months after a partial reversal of a prior US ban allowed Nvidia to resume sales to China under strict conditions — including paying 15% of Chinese revenues to the US government.

As US-China AI rivalry intensifies, Nvidia finds itself at the heart of a global tech tug-of-war.
