iPhone 17 Lineup Leaked: Thinner 'Air' Model, Major Design Shakeup, and ProMotion for All Set for 2025

The tech world is already buzzing about 2025, and for good reason. While the iPhone 16 is just hitting shelves, a tidal wave of leaks and industry reports has painted a remarkably detailed picture of the iPhone 17 lineup, and it shapes up to be the most significant iPhone overhaul since the iPhone X.

Apple is poised to completely restructure its flagship series, introducing a new tier, revamping designs across the board, and finally bringing premium features to its entire family. Here’s everything we know so far about the four expected models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Goodbye Plus, Hello Air: A New Mid-Tier Champion

The biggest news is the introduction of the iPhone 17 "Air." This isn't just a name change; it represents a new philosophy for Apple's mid-range offering. Replacing the less popular Plus model, the Air is designed to be a standout device, prioritizing form factor and modern aesthetics.

  • Radically Thin Design: The headline feature is its astonishing thinness. Reports conflict slightly, but it's expected to be between 5.5mm and 6.25mm thick, making it significantly slimmer than the current 8.25mm-thick iPhone 16 Pro and potentially the thinnest iPhone ever made.

  • New Size and Look: It will sport a ~6.6-inch display, slotting perfectly between the Pro (6.3") and Pro Max (6.9"). Its design will feature a large, centered camera bump on the back—a first for iPhone—housing a single advanced 48MP lens. Dummy models also show a USB-C port shifted toward the back to accommodate the ultra-thin chassis.

  • Strategic Positioning: Don't let the "Air" name fool you into thinking it's the most expensive. It's positioned as a mid-tier device, expected to start at $899. It will be more expensive than the standard iPhone 17 but cheaper than the Pros, finally offering a compelling middle-ground option.

  •

iPhone 17 Pro: The Most Dramatic Redesign in Years

The Pro models are also in for a massive visual shakeup, moving away from the design language that has defined iPhones for nearly a decade.

  • New Materials: Apple is reportedly ditching the titanium frame and returning to aluminum. More radically, the back may transition from all-glass to a "half-glass, half-aluminum" design. The glass portion on the bottom would retain MagSafe functionality, while the aluminum top could significantly improve durability.

  • Horizontal Camera Bar: The square camera bump is out. In its place is a new elongated, horizontal "camera bar" with rounded corners, reminiscent of classic camera designs or modern Android phones. This bar will be made of aluminum and house the triple-lens system in a new layout.

  • Relocated Logo: To accommodate this new bar, Apple is rumored to be moving the Apple logo to a lower position on the back, potentially integrating it within a break in the MagSafe ring.

Features for Everyone: ProMotion and More

In a major win for consumers, Apple is finally democratizing its best display technology.

  • ProMotion for All: Every model in the iPhone 17 lineup—including the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Air—is expected to feature a 120Hz ProMotion LTPO display. This means buttery-smooth scrolling and responsiveness will no longer be exclusive to the Pro models.

  • Thermal and Performance Upgrades: The Pro models are tipped to get a vapor chamber cooling system to manage the heat from the powerful new A19 Pro chip, preventing performance throttling during intensive tasks. All models will also feature Apple's first custom Wi-Fi 7 chip for improved efficiency and connectivity.

  • Camera Advances: The front camera is getting a universal upgrade to 24MP for sharper selfies and video calls. The Pro Max is slated to receive a massive camera boost with a 48MP Telephoto lens (up from 12MP), completing a triple 48MP array and potentially enabling 8K video recording. The Pro models might also introduce a mechanical variable aperture for DSLR-like control over depth of field.

Pricing, Launch, and What Comes Next

  • Potential Price Hikes: Component costs and tariffs may lead to a price increase across the board. Analysts suggest a $50 hike could be incoming, potentially making the standard iPhone 17 start at $849 and the Pro models correspondingly more expensive.

  • Launch Date: Based on historical patterns and some carrier leaks, the iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with pre-orders the following Friday and availability on September 19.

  • The Future is Foldable (and Spring Launches): Looking ahead, 2026 is set to be even more revolutionary. Apple is planning to split its release cycle, with high-end models (including a rumored foldable iPhone) launching in the fall and standard models following in the spring. 2026 is also the target for under-display Face ID technology, which would finally allow for a truly all-screen design in the years to come.
