Amazon Kills Off Fire TV Blaster, Offers Discounts as Apology

Amazon has sent a definitive email to owners of a specific device: the Fire TV Blaster will soon stop working entirely. The company announced it is ending support for this accessory and will remotely disable all units "in the coming weeks."

The Fire TV Blaster was a small box that allowed users to add hands-free voice control to their home theater setups. When paired with an Amazon Echo smart speaker, it could send infrared (IR) signals to control a TV, soundbar, or cable box using just your voice—similar to the functionality built into the more expensive Fire TV Cube. Amazon stopped selling the device about a year ago, citing modest popularity.

While it's not uncommon for companies to end software updates for older products, the decision to completely "brick" or disable devices that are still functioning is a notable and controversial move. This is different from how Amazon handled its Fire TV Recast DVR, which was discontinued over two years ago but remains operational for existing owners.

As a consolation, Amazon is offering affected customers two exclusive discount codes. They can use the promo code 60FTV to purchase a Fire TV Cube for $79.99 (a $60 discount off its regular $139.99 price). Alternatively, they can use the code 50FTV to get 50% off any model of the Fire TV Stick. Both offers are valid until March 31, 2026.

The move highlights the risks of investing in connected devices that rely entirely on a company's servers to function, as they can be rendered useless with a single remote command.
