New AirTag 2: Better Range & Apple Watch Support | DeviceDecode Review

New AirTag 2: Better Range & Apple Watch Support | DeviceDecode Review

Apple has finally updated its popular tracking device with the release of the new AirTag 2. While it looks almost identical to the first version, the inside has been completely rebuilt to make finding your lost keys, bags, or luggage easier than ever.

Better Tracking with 50% More Range

The biggest change is the addition of Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This is the same powerful chip found in the latest iPhone 17 and Apple Watch models. Because of this upgrade, the "Precision Finding" feature—which gives you an arrow on your screen to lead you to your item—now works from 50% farther away. If you used to lose signal across a large room, this new version will stay connected much longer.

A Louder Speaker for Tough Spots

We have all been there: trying to listen for a tiny "chirp" coming from deep inside a sofa or a thick backpack. Apple fixed this by making the speaker in the AirTag 2 50% louder. Apple says you can now hear the sound from twice the distance compared to the original model. They have also added a new, more distinct chime to help it stand out in noisy environments.

Use Your Apple Watch to Find Your Stuff

For the first time, you don't even need to take your phone out of your pocket to find your items. With the new watchOS 26.2.1 update, you can use Precision Finding right on your wrist. If you have an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or any newer model, your watch will show you exactly which direction to walk and how many feet away your AirTag is.

Privacy and Security

Apple continues to lead the way in privacy. The AirTag 2 is designed specifically to track objects, not people. It features improved anti-stalking tech that sends alerts to nearby smartphones if an unknown AirTag is moving with them. The data is also fully encrypted, meaning not even Apple knows where your items are located.

Familiar Design, Same Price

The best news for many fans is that the physical shape hasn't changed. This means all your expensive leather keyrings and luggage tags from the first AirTag will still fit perfectly. Even better, Apple is keeping the price the same: $29 for one or $99 for a pack of four.

Whether you are a frequent traveler or someone who just constantly loses their wallet at home, the AirTag 2 is a small but powerful upgrade that brings a lot of peace of mind.
